Okta Single Sign-On – IT work starting at 5pm on Friday 26 July
Posted on behalf of: Better Sussex
Last updated: Thursday, 25 July 2024
From 5pm on Friday 26 July, work will take place to enable Okta Single Sign-On (SSO) to be used across more University applications and software, including Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, Word, etc.), Box, Canvas, Panopto and Zoom, amongst others. This means you will need to enter your Sussex IT credentials (e.g. ano123@sussex.ac.uk) and password to access them via a new Okta sign-in page.
This transition will help bolster our cyber security. All users of university IT apps and systems are advised that there is a chance of disruption through Friday evening and over the weekend, which may include certain apps being inaccessible for a short period of time.
To make the transition process as simple as possible, we are requesting that all users log off work by 5pm on Friday and do not log on again until Monday morning, unless absolutely necessary.
In practice this means:
- Saving your work from 4pm
- Logging out of your devices before 5pm
If you need to use your Sussex account over the weekend and encounter any issues, please do not raise a Service Desk ticket through the IT Service Portal until Monday 29 July. IT teams will be working hard over the weekend to identify and resolve any issues. We expect normal service to resume on the morning of Monday 29 July.
In the unlikely event that you encounter any issues on Monday, please contact the IT Service Desk using one of the following methods:
- IT Service Desk general enquiries line: Ext 8090 (+44 1273 678090)
- Email: itservicedesk@sussex.ac.uk
If you have any questions before 5pm on Friday, please email Okta.SSO-MFA@sussex.ac.uk
What is Okta Single Sign-On?
Sussex has been using Okta Single Sign-On (SSO) since last year to allow users to securely access applications such as Sussex Direct, LearnUpon, Raisers Edge and the IT Service Portal using just one set of credentials (username/password).
Some of the applications that will soon also require SSO log-in are:
- Microsoft 365 (including Outlook, Excel, OneDrive, etc)
- Canvas
- Panopto
- Zoom
- Box
- Jira
This list is not exhaustive – you may find that other apps also require SSO log-in to access.
