Using Contextually Relevant Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Approaches to Deliver Culturally Sensitive Programs in Support of Girls’ Education across India, Pakistan, and Kenya
Many organizations are striving to improve access to quality education for girls, with both local and international non-profits playing a pivotal role. These initiatives often begin on a small scale, addressing specific local needs, but as organizations expand, they typically require a more systematized approach to maintain effectiveness and contextual relevance. This research presentation will discuss Girl Rising’s efforts to systematically enhance its impact on the quality of girls' education across Pakistan, India, and Kenya by evaluating and refining its educational program on gender and social-emotional learning between 2021 and 2024.
The presentation will highlight how a contextually relevant Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning framework was developed and applied to measure changes in knowledge and attitudes among students and teachers engaged in Girl Rising’s programs. Through this framework, the organization was able to identify best practices in fostering girls' education and strengthen its curriculum and program delivery. Specific evaluation findings will reveal both the shared and unique aspects of these contexts, as well as the role of storytelling in addressing topics such as self-awareness, gender, rights, and emotional well-being. The presentation will conclude by emphasizing how this evidence has enabled Girl Rising to design sustainable, culturally sensitive programs that address gender in classrooms and communities, incorporate mental health and well-being content, and leverage local networks, resources, and best practices in India and Kenya.
