Abstract - Timing and precise frequency control are critical enablers to the defence enterprise across all domains, requiring varying levels of robustness and performance to achieve different goals. While some applications only depend on millisecond synchronisation, others might need to maintain sub-nanosecond level timing offsets for extended holdover periods. The development of high performance and locally-available time sources within the UK strengthens the MOD’s ability to operate independently in challenging environments. At our recent DATA trial, Dstl was able to demonstrate and characterise two optical atomic clocks – an iodine clock developed internally and another developed by an industry partner. In this talk we discuss the building blocks and our engineering approach to this development, and present some comments on possible future opportunities for further demonstrations.
