Biomedical science is under rapid technological change, but access to modern resources for research and healthcare can be very problematic in the lower and middle-income countries where most of the world’s population lives. However, there is a growing parallel movement towards open-source technologies for bioscience research and healthcare, enabled by key advances in cheap consumer electronics, rapid prototyping, and new approaches to processing data – with Sussex colleagues being at the forefront in some of these areas. If given enough support, this movement could lead to the free exchange of crucial – and open-source – resources for biomedical research and ultimately a step change in local testing, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Colleagues working in different centres at Sussex – Sussex Neuroscience, the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre, Global Health or SPRU – will unite at the session to share their complementary perspectives and trigger discussion on how Sussex can contribute to progress in this crucial new field.
Panel, hosted by Miguel Maravall (Sussex Neuroscience; Life Sciences):
- Andre Maia Chagas, Sussex Neuroscience and Open Research Technologies Hub; Life Sciences
- Iris Asllani, Sussex Neuroscience; Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre; BSMS
- Katherine Prescott, Centre for Global Health Research; BSMS
- Adrian Smith, SPRU; Sussex Business School
Whether you're a student, staff, or just curious about the topic - all are welcome.
Please note, you can attend this event either in-person or online. In-person - please go to Bramber House Terrace Room, University of Sussex, Falmer. Virtual attendance - a Zoom link will be sent to you after registration.
