This event - hosted by the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab’s AI,Computational Society and Culture cluster - will bring together legal scholars, creators’ rights advocates, and industry stakeholders to expand the current UK policy debate on AI model training and copyright. The huge public debate generated by the recent consultation has often been framed as a simple conflict between the British creative industries and large – foreign - AI firms. Instead this roundtable aims to foreground the perspectives of researchers, smaller creators, and citizens.
As questions mount on how UK copyright law should apply to AI training, key issues have emerged around legal uncertainty, fair remuneration, research access, and public trust. At stake are not only economic interests in media production, scientific development and innovation, but also democratic values—such as participation, consent, and cultural representation in the age of generative AI.
This roundtable will open space for nuanced discussion of the impact of the current proposals on researchers, independent creators and prosumers including the scope of exceptions and limitations, the practical implications of opt-out models, transparency obligations, and licensing frameworks.
This is an in-person event but will also be available as a hybrid option.Lunch will be provided.
