As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact, IT Services are making changes to the printing service on campus during June.
The University operates more than 160 Kyocera Multi-Function Device (MFD) printers across campus – providing reliable, fast and secure printing as well as scanning and copying.
During June, IT Services will decommission printers across campus that are not maintained under our contract with Kyocera. These stand-alone devices are not subject to the maintenance standards of the bigger MFD machines, so tend to be more prone to technical faults. Many are also older models, which use more energy – and there are no facilitates available on campus to recycle their spent ink and toner cartridges.
Staff and students will continue to be able to print, scan and copy from any of the MFDs located across campus. Printing will be released only when an individual logs into the MFD with their ID (Salto) card, helping keep their documents secure.
These machines are regularly maintained by a dedicated on-site engineer, and they employ advanced power management to ensure that they use minimal power when not in use. As part of the University’s contract with Kyocera, all waste products from the devices are also recycled rather than being sent to landfill.
All MFDs were recently reconfigured so that they can be used by all staff and students, meaning that students will now be able to print from any of the devices. As well as significantly reducing costs, this allows staff and students to work more sustainably, saving paper and helping reduce our carbon footprint.
