Inclusion
Inclusion is about fostering a culture and mindset in an individual to enable them to say, “I belong here”, “I feel valued here”, and “I can be myself here”. They will then feel they can take part and contribute as their authentic self.
Be the change you want to see in the workplace by modelling inclusive behaviour. This LinkedIn Learning course on Unlocking authentic communication in a culturally diverse workplace will help. And you can become a better ally by watching Inclusive mindset for committed allies. There are a number of staff networks you can join to meet and connect with others on campus.
This course has some practical tools to help everyone develop interpersonal skills such as self-awareness, dealing with disagreement, and deep listening Develop Interpersonal Skills for Inclusive Workplaces.
If you are a leader and embody inclusive leadership behaviours, people will feel inspired to perform better. This Inclusive Leadership course will help you develop practical strategies to work more inclusively.
But you can start to be more inclusive now by writing down three things you can commit to doing as a leader to be more inclusive. It might be that you could schedule more regular meetings specifically to listen with an empathetic ear, have the courage to admit when you don’t have all the answers, or ensure you are being curious and open to different perspectives. Whatever your commitments, keep them near so you can continue to reflect on them.
The EDI webpage provides advice for staff, including resources from national disability charities and organisations, plus details of upcoming events and opportunities for staff.
The Organisational Development team are dedicated to helping staff at the University to reach their full potential. Find out more about who we are here.
