Open to all staff and students and hosted jointly by ACoRNS and the COALESCE Lab, this event will be an opportunity to learn more about autism from expert researchers and to celebrate the work of our students.
The Autism Community Research Network Sussex (ACoRNS) is a collaboration between Psychology researchers at Sussex and local autism stakeholders aiming to improve education for autistic children and young people. The COALESCE-lab (collaborative autism learning, scholarship and education) is a new lab working with ACoRNS to engage the university community to foster an autism-friendly approach to teaching, research and day-to-day life at Sussex.
Alex Medintu, a Psychology student on placement with ACoRNS said:
'The purpose of this event is to celebrate Autism Acceptance Week by showcasing the incredible work and perspectives of students on Autism. With workshops run by faculty, student talks about interesting topics, the opportunity to browse the poster exhibition showcasing students' research and work from global classrooms, and a pop-up sensory room to relax; it's a chance for people to engage in conversations, challenge stereotypes, and learn how they can contribute to a more inclusive and accepting community.'
'Autism Acceptance Week is a dedicated time to celebrate, support, and raise awareness about autism and the experiences of autistic individuals. It goes beyond just awareness by promoting true acceptance, understanding, and inclusion in all aspects of society. The week is an opportunity to challenge stereotypes, highlight strengths, and ensure that autistic voices are heard and valued. This week is important because autistic individuals often face barriers in education, employment, and social settings due to misunderstanding and lack of support. By fostering acceptance rather than just awareness, we create environments where autistic people feel respected, included, and empowered to be themselves. It helps educate the wider community on how we can be allies and support autistic individuals in meaningful ways.'
The event takes place on Wednesday 2 April, 13:00 - 16:00 in Pevensey 1 (Mezzanine area) and is open to all.
Pre-booking via Eventbrite is required for the workshops.
