Playful Sussex: Exploring Playful Approaches to Learning and Engagement

Last updated: Thursday, 7 August 2025

You are warmly invited to Playful Sussex, an afternoon of presentations, demonstrations, and discussion on the value of playful approaches in higher education.
This event is part of RE:PLAY (Researching the Effectiveness of Playful Learning in Higher Education), a three-year ESRC-funded project in which the University of Sussex is playing a central role. Bringing together researchers from across the UK, this is the first large-scale study of its kind focused on playful learning in UK universities.
RE:PLAY explores how methods such as role play, simulation, collaborative games, and interactive challenges are currently used in teaching and learning. The project aims to build an evidence base for what works, how, and why, responding to growing interest in alternatives to traditional classroom dynamics.
The event will include:
-
Presentations from Sussex colleagues using playful approaches in their teaching
-
Opportunities to try out some playful learning techniques
-
Discussion and reflection
Tea and coffee will be provided.
We are also still inviting expressions of interest from academics to become RE:PLAY Fellows. Fellows will be supported to redesign one of their modules using playful approaches and to research the experience of change in their own practice, as well as the impacts on students. No prior experience with playful methods is required — we are looking for colleagues with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to try something new.
Date: Tuesday 16 September
Time: 1:30 – 4:30 PM
Location: The Meeting House, University of Sussex
Open to all staff and students interested in creative, inclusive, and evidence-informed approaches to teaching and learning. We look forward to welcoming you. If you have any questions, please contact Natalie Trevino at nbt21@sussex.ac.uk
