In September 2023, RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) was found to have been used in the construction of Mandela Hall, Falmer House, home to the University of Sussex Student Union (USSU).
Mandela Hall was closed as a safety precaution and to allow the condition of the RAAC panels to be assessed. These surveys are now complete and have deemed the RAAC panels to be in good condition, with a recommendation for minor improvement works in advance of reopening the hall.
As a Grade I Listed building of exceptional national, architectural, and historical importance, significant care has been taken to protect the architectural integrity of Falmer House throughout the surveys and when planning the improvement works. These works are now underway, and when complete, Mandela Hall will be fully reopened to students.
During the survey inspections, the original mural, Day’s Rest, Day’s Work, by acclaimed artist Ivon Hitchens, was moved into storage. This artwork will be reinstated when the improvement works are complete.
