The Digital Infrastructure Programme (DIP), part of the University’s Capital Programme, is one of the ways we aim to develop better ways of working. Find out what we’ve achieved so far and what’s coming up next for the programme.
What is DIP?
Digital infrastructure is the hardware, software, networks, and data centres that keep digital services running. DIP will modernise our digital infrastructure services to support our digital operations. It is comprised of three main projects: Telephony Modernisation; Cloud Enablement; and Cloud Transformation. The programme will establish new digital services to help boost staff and student experience by introducing modern, sustainable, integrated and secure digital infrastructure.
What has the programme achieved so far?
Colleagues in Sussex Projects, the Unified Communications team in IT Services, and Change Champions across campus have been working hard to roll out our new telephony system. Thanks to a huge collaborative effort, individuals in schools and most divisions have now been migrated over to MS Teams Calling, with just the Library left to move across later in June. Colleagues can now make phone calls from anywhere to both inside and outside of the University via MS Teams using software fully supported by IT Services.
What’s next?
We’re modernising our approach to digital infrastructure by introducing a mix of on and off-site cloud-based services. This will help us meet the IT needs of our modern workforce by improving our data security, speed, and sustainability, as well as enabling better team collaboration through improved access to data. It will also mean we can respond quickly and safely to changing IT needs.
The Cloud Enablement project is beginning by training ITS colleagues in the set up and maintenance of a new system ‘back up’ storage facility and cloud-based data archive. This will help us recover data more quickly, consistently and securely.
This paves the way for the Cloud Transformation project, the business case for which will be reviewed by senior governance over the summer. This project aims to provide us with an all-new server and service infrastructure which will underpin the University’s digital applications for the next five to seven years.
