Network Replacement Project (NRP) – what’s next?
Posted on behalf of: The Transforming Sussex team
Last updated: Wednesday, 26 February 2025

The Network Replacement Project (NRP) is a flagship project which will provide a modern, secure, high-speed wired and wireless data network on campus. Our vision is to provide a modern network that will support transformative learning experiences and enable world-leading research.
Work is making steady progress, but what can you expect to see next and what does it mean for you?
What’s the focus now?
Following a successful end to underground cable duct works in early January (where over 3,000 metres of ducting were installed) the team are focused on installing new cables in on-campus residences to improve internet connectivity and reliability.
Works are nearing completion in Northfield and well underway in Lewes Court, with work in Brighthelm expected to begin soon. Contractors will then progress to other residences where new cabling is needed. Work in affected residences is expected to come to an end in August.
Next steps
- Academic and office buildings: We'll soon begin surveying and planning for the next phase of the project, which will involve cabling upgrades across all academic and office buildings on campus. We’ll keep you updated in good time if this impacts you directly.
- New core location: We're also working on the construction of a new location to house our core network to support the upgraded network and ensure optimal performance, resilience and security.
- Preparing for the future: Behind the scenes, our team is meticulously planning the migration of over 30,000 devices to the new network. This will involve careful design and testing to ensure a seamless and uninterrupted transition for everyone.
What this will mean for you:
- Improved connectivity: Faster and more reliable internet access in your residence halls, classrooms, and offices.
- Enhanced performance: A more robust and secure network foundation to support your academic and research activities.
- Future-proofed infrastructure: A network designed to meet the evolving demands of teaching, learning, and research for years to come.
The team
The project team consists of experts from ITS, Estates and Facilities, and Sussex Projects, collaborating closely with key partners; Capita, Electranet, Roc Technologies, and FutureTech. The project hub is based in Shawcross, where the team can be found when not out on campus.
The team is committed to minimising any disruptions and keeping everyone informed throughout the project, we understand that work like this can sometimes cause disruption. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to enhance the University's network infrastructure.
