Abstract: While cutting-edge nanoscale transistors in contemporary microprocessors boast remarkable speed, the overall processing velocity is hampered by the limited bandwidth of electronic interconnects. In contrast, photonic interconnects have the capacity to transmit data at significantly higher rates than their electronic counterparts. Yet, the miniaturization of photonic components is bound by the diffraction limit, confining the size of photonic circuits to the operational wavelength, measured in hundreds of nanometers.

The capability to manipulate and mold light on a nanoscopic scale enables the creation of nanophotonic devices. These devices match the velocity of photonic equipment while achieving the diminutive scale of electronic components, heralding a new era of swift and compact light-based systems.

In this presentation, we will explore various techniques for controlling and shaping light at the nanoscale, utilizing optical metamaterials and nanostructures. Subsequently, we will delve into the practical applications of these methods in forging cutting-edge systems for the future. Specifically, we will examine four pivotal areas: the development of next-generation high-speed wireless communication systems, the enhancement of efficiency in ultra-thin film solar cells, the improvement of resolution in imaging systems, and the pioneering of invisibility cloaks and optical illusions. 

Bio: Dr. Leila Yousefi is the newest addition to the school of Engineering and Informatics of the University of Sussex, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge in nanophotonics and metamaterials. With over 90 journal articles and conference papers to her name, Dr. Yousefi's expertise is well-established. Her previous tenure at the University of Tehran saw her as an Associate Professor and head of the Nano-Photonics and Metamaterials Research Lab. Her research excellence has been recognized with several accolades, including the Distinguished Faculty Award for Research Excellence in 2023, the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran's Award for Industrial Projects Excellence in 2022, and the International Festival of University of Tehran's Award for International Scientific Collaborations in 2018.

Dr. Yousefi's academic journey began at Sharif University of Technology, Iran, where she earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in electrical engineering, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Her postdoctoral endeavors at Waterloo (2009-2011) focused on metamaterials, miniaturized antennas, electromagnetic bandgap structures, and MIMO systems. She furthered her research in nanophotonics and plasmonics as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Johns Hopkins University (2011-2013). In 2013, she joined the University of Tehran, as an Assistant Professor, and later elevated to the Associate Professor level. Dr. Leila Yousefi served at the University of Tehran until 2024, after which she became a valued member of the University of Sussex faculty.
