Drawing on bystander research, this workshop focuses on how to use academic space to be an upstander (i.e., active bystander) instead of a passive bystander. The workshop (a) introduces bystander research and barriers to being an upstander, (b) discusses how to apply bystander intervention in classroom settings, and (c) offers various techniques to challenge bias, prejudice, and discrimination in academic settings. The workshop will include a mix of interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises.
This workshop is designed for academics and university staff who want to foster inclusive and equitable (classroom) environments. While primarily aimed at faculty and teaching staff, students interested in activism and inclusive teaching are also welcome.
Three learning outcomes:
- Understand some of the key challenges academics face when intervening in discriminatory situations in the classroom.
- Learn the barriers to being an upstander, especially in educational settings.
- Develop teaching practices based on bystander intervention to challenge discriminatory behaviour in classrooms.
