Dr Alexandra Loske FSA is a British-German art historian, writer, and Curator of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. She read English and Linguistics at Humboldt University, Berlin, and Art History at the University of Sussex, where she is a Research Associate, working on women in colour history. In 2024 she gave the prestigious Mondrian Lecture on colour for the Sikkens Foundation in Rotterdam, and in 2025 curated Colour: A Chromatic Promenade Through the Royal Pavilion.
Alexandra has published and broadcast widely on colour and other topics, including Colour: A Visual History (2019), 111 Places in Brighton and Lewes That You Shouldn’t Miss, and the substantial Book of Colour Concepts (TASCHEN), as well as the first monograph on pioneering colour theorist Miss Gartside (Abstract Visions of Colour). She can be heard on the National Gallery’s new podcast series Stories in Colour. Her latest books are The Artist’s Palette (Thames & Hudson) (translated into several languages), and a new book on the Royal Pavilion with Yale University Press, The Royal Pavilion, Brighton: A Regency Palace of Colour and Sensation. In her talk she will tell the story of her journey through colour, and how she researched and wrote The Artist’s Palette.
