You are invited to a special dance workshop on Dancing Reproductive Health, on Friday 27 March, 1pm - 3pm (UK time) with Maria Moscati and Sean Mulcahy and organised with CORTH (the Centre for Cultures of Reproduction, Technologies and Health).
This is an in-person event taking place in the Global Studies Resource Centre (GSRC, Arts C).
In her argument for advancing reproductive health from the perspective of public health and human rights, Alicia Yamin argues that “every field – including public health and human rights – has its own dance: its own steps and moves and rhythms in the way it approaches issues. In forging a common agenda, we need not learn the other’s dance; we just have to learn how to dance together” (Yamin 2005: 29). By welcoming Yamin’s invitation, in this workshop, preceding the Socio-Legal Studies Association Annual Conference at the University of Sussex, participants will think and move through dance as a method of exploring processes and technologies of reproductive health.
There is a growing body of literature on reproductive health that utilises choreography as a metaphor for reproductive health processes, such as fertilisation, sperm donation, and other technologies of reproductive healthcare (Lowik 2023; Thompson 2005; Yamin 2005; Adrian 2015; Nordqvist 2011; Cussins 1996), but no literature that utilises choreography as a method to explore these processes and technologies. Thus, the workshop is an attempt to start a conversation to address this gap. At the same time, as reproduction is about bodies that move, and embodied experience, this workshop, by drawing upon several dance-practice initiatives developed by Sean Mucahy and Marica Moscati during academic conferences, including Legal Scholars at the Ballet Barre practical dance session at SLSA 2025, and the previous Dancing Surrogacy workshop at CORTH, will involve participants in a dance class and impro choreography on themes concerning reproductive health. The two practical sessions will mark the beginning and the end of the event, as frame to develop an embodied conversation of reproductive health, rights and justice and introduction to the SLSA 2026 current topic on Dance/Law.
No previous dance experience is required. Everyone welcome to attend!
