Brian Barnett, who worked in Sussexsport for over 30 years, died on 22 June.
From May 1966 until he retired 34 years later Brian worked in various roles for Sussexsport, culminating in him being the Operations Manager. He also worked in the estates department before moving to the Sport Centre.
Karen Creffield, former Head of Sport, said: “Brian was a much loved and respected member of the sports team for many years. Nothing was ever too much trouble and I shall always remember Brian for his humour and making us smile even in the most challenging situations.”
Brian was well known across campus, especially through his involvement in the inter-staff competitions that were a big part of campus life in the 1980s and 1990s; he was a regular for the 'Faculty Rats', playing alongside Charles Dudley and Geoff Lockwood.
He was a very talented sportsman, representing Ringmer Football Club and Ringmer Cricket Club; he lived in Ringmer for most of his life.
Charles Dudley, Director of Residential, Sport and Trading Services, said: “Brian was a hugely popular and respected colleague with a great sense of humour. I also knew him as a very talented sportsman. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends."
Terry Cooper, current Deputy Head of Sport, remembers Brian very fondly: “Brian was a man of strong principles and had a fantastic way of making people feel comfortable and valued. Brian was my first line manager here at Sussex and he taught me a lot that I still adhere to now. He was also great fun to be around and will be remembered by myself and others with much love.”
Brian’s funeral will be held on Monday 17 July at 3.30pm at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Ringmer.
