The Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA) welcomed the School of Business, Management and Economics again this year for the annual BMEc Awards evening, organised by the School's Student Experience team.
Special guests Deputy Vice Chancellor Saul Becker and Pro Vice Chancellors Stephen Shute and Michael Davies joined members of the School community to celebrate their successes over the past year.
Head of School Steve McGuire (pictured right) kicked off proceedings by welcoming attendees to the event before handing over to our trio of hosts: Farai Jena, Rashaad Shabab and Student Rep chair Paul Waldmann. With over 600 nominations spanning 13 award categories, help was enlisted from a number of student and staff guest presenters to reveal the shortlisted nominees and announce the winners of each award.
The highlight of the evening for many was a deeply personal talk by guest speaker Ali Hannon that was both witty and moving in equal measure. Ali graduated from Sussex in 2012 with a first in Business and Management Studies, and has since become a communications professional, comedy performer and queer activist. This breadth of experiences enabled Ali to offer a series of inspirational insights from the worlds of work and study, as well as life in general, with the key message being the importance of remaining true to yourself in everything you do.
An exhilarating performance by the Sussex Dance Bhangra Troupe brought the awards presentation to a close, with guests then able to enjoy prosecco and nibbles in the ACCA bar, dance along to a music set by DJ Vik Winter and pose with an array of amusing props in the BMEc photo and video booths.
