Earlier today, Kelly Coate, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students, wrote to all taught students. You can read her full email below:
As we approach the end of this academic year, I want to wish you all a very happy summer! Congratulations on your hard work and achievements throughout this year.
During the summer vacation, some campus facilities may be closed or operating different hours, but student services such as the Student Centre, the Library, Careers and Entrepreneurship, the wellbeing support team or the onsite GP practice will still be available for you to access in person or on the phone. You can find out facility opening times, and further information about staying in University-managed accommodation during summer, on the Student Hub.
Please note that as part of the closure of York House, our Security Centre and 24-hour Residential Reception are relocating to Bramber House, close to the Student Centre. Watch this video to see the new location.

Marking and assessment boycott
Members of one of our trade unions, UCU, began a marking and assessment boycott from 20 April as part of their national industrial action. As I said in previous updates, I want to again assure you that we will do all that we can to ensure we mitigate any impact on our students’ education and assessment and examination results caused by a marking and assessment boycott at Sussex.
We will continue our discussions with local UCU representatives about this national action, and we hope that there will be a swift resolution to the dispute.
Get a refund on your TV licence
If you’re going back home for the summer, you could be due a refund on any months you’ve still got left on your TV licence, up to £48.50. See if you’re eligible on the TV licensing website.
Watch this short animated video to learn when you do and don’t need a TV licence.
Moving out for the summer? Donate your unwanted stuff
If you’re moving out of campus for the summer and have things you no longer need, you can donate them at your nearest residential reception or at the Jubilee building. We’re looking for clothes, shoes, books, CDs, DVDs, accessories, home and kitchenware, and non-perishable food (e.g. tins and cans).
Donated food will be passed on to the Student Welfare Scheme and local food banks, while all other items will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.
Bike Week 2023: get active for the chance to win an electric, folding bike!
Next week we’ll be celebrating Bike Week’s 100th birthday with EcoGo, with a range of century and cycling-related challenges. You could win points, prizes and even a grand prize of an electric, folding Batribike worth £1,300! Find out more.
Brighton Fringe: exploring the student journey
This Friday 2 June, don’t forget to visit our free Brighton Fringe exhibition, Creating Voice: Exploring the Student Journey at the University of Sussex, between 12 noon and 4pm at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts here on campus. The event explores the student journey through art, photography, music and creative writing and celebrates the varied experiences of our diverse community.
Book your place through the Brighton Fringe website. Free nibbles and soft drinks will be provided!
With best wishes,
Professor Kelly Coate, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students
