Nominations to be one of next years SU Officers close on Friday 14 March at 5pm.
We have a range of roles - some full time sabbatical roles, some part time campaigning roles, and also student trustee roles. They're a really good opportunity for students, and will enable them to get experience leading a large charity as part of the executive or trustee board.
The landing page for the elections on the SU website is here: https://sussexstudent.com/elections
FAQs for staff:
1. Can international students on a Tier 4 Visa run for a sabbatical role? Yes! The Home Office has an exemption for Tier 4 student visa holders who want to be a sabbatical officer at their SU - if they win, the University notifies the Home Office they need a visa extension, and the SU will pay the cost of this. However for some scholarships (e.g. Chevening) there may be things in the contract with their scholarship provider that prevent them - so if in doubt signpost them to studentvoice@sussexstudent.com and we can advise them.
2. Can I encourage students who I think would be good to nominate themselves? Yes!
3. Can I support a particular candidate publicly, or let them speak in my lecture? We ask staff not to endorse a particular candidate, to ensure campaigning is led by student members. Candidates can't have uneven access to lecture spaces - so if you let one candidate speak, you'd need to let them all speak. For this reason, we advise you don't let one of your students have lecture time to speak, as there may be a lot of candidates for that role. If you would like to invite all candidates, email studentvoice@sussexstudent.com and we can help advertise it to all candidates
4. I'm a PhD student involved in teaching - what does this mean for me? As a PhD student you're a member of the student's union, and can run for office, or campaign for students in the election, in your capacity as a student. We only ask that you are neutral in your capacity as a staff member, i.e. you can't campaign during a seminar you're delivering, but outside of your teaching hours you can.
