Maintaining an understanding about fire safety can prevent or reduce the impacts of fire incidents which could cause harm, property damage, or even fatalities.
Here at the University, mandatory Fire Awareness e-learning is available for all staff on LearnUpon. This provides you with the knowledge you need to remain safe on campus and can be applied at home as well. Staff can also attend in-person fire warden training.
Our Fire Safety Team also carries out fire evacuation drills in student accommodation. This had a positive impact during a recent kitchen fire at the Camber residences where food was reheated in an air fryer. Fire doors were closed, and an evacuation took place meaning the fire was contained to the kitchen and no one was injured.
The University’s mandatory Fire Awareness e-learning will help you remain vigilant of fire safety hazards on campus, and at home too.
Did you know that over 50% of UK domestic fires are a result of cooking? The kitchen is the single most dangerous place in your home.
Some simple tips on how to prevent kitchen fires:
- Do not leave hob cooking unattended.
- Do not cook if you are affected by alcohol or drugs.
- Do not put oven gloves or tea towels on the cooker.
- Keep fire doors closed.
If you find a fire on campus:
- activate the nearest call point.
- leave the building.
- await further instructions from the Security Team.
