Have your say in the University’s Council and Senate elections

Elections will soon take place for Professional Services and academic vacancies on both the University’s Council and Senate, to represent for a three-year period from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2028.
Ballots will start on Monday 9 June, when eligible voters will receive an email from CIVICA election services, who manage the vote independently on behalf of the University.
Please take a few minutes to cast your vote and help ensure that staff are properly represented on these bodies.
The ballot will run until Friday 20 June and results will be made available w/c 23 June on the Governance webpages.
Professional Services staff
Two Professional Services staff members are standing to represent colleagues on Council. Only eligible Professional Services staff can vote for PS representation on Council:
- Gemma Harman, Senior Research Manager, School of Engineering and Informatics
- Claudia Raistrick, Senior Project Manager, University Strategy Development
Academic staff
Among academic staff, 17 individuals are standing to represent Faculty at Senate and overarching Academic representation on Council. Only eligible academics can vote for academic representation on Council and only respective Faculty representatives can vote for each of the Faculty representations on Senate.
There are five separate elections running as follows:
Academic representative to Council
Three nominees for one vacancy:
- Mr Mark Fisher, Associate Professor in Accounting, Business School
- Dr Jackie Grant, Senior Teaching Fellow in Physics, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences
- Professor Maziar Nekovee, Professor of Telecoms and Mobile Technologies, School of Engineering and Informatics
Faculty of Media, Arts & Humanities (MAH) representative to Senate
Three nominees for one vacancy:
- Dr Aaron Kahn, Reader in Spanish
- Dr Daniel Molto, Assistant Professor of Philosophy
- Dr Avey (Sandra) Nelson, Assistant Professor in Media, Arts and Humanities
University of Sussex Business School (USBS) representative to Senate
Two nominees for one vacancy:
- Dr Maria Holgado Granados, Associate Professor in Operations Management
- Professor Nachiappan Subramanian, Professor of Operations and Logistics Management and Supply Chains
Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine representative to Senate
Three nominees for two vacancies:
- Dr Kathryn Lester, Associate Professor in Psychology
- Dr Naercio David Pedro Magaia, Assistant Professor in Computer Science and AI
- Professor Andrew Philippides, Professor of Biorobotics
Faculty of Social Science representative to Senate
Six nominees for three vacancies:
- Dr Paul Boyce, Associate Professor in Anthropology and International Development
- Dr Lindsay Clark, Assistant Professor in International Relations
- Professor Priya Deshingkar, Professor of Migration and Development
- Mr Paul Eden, Associate Professor in Law
