Addressing global challenges
Dr Suraj Lakhani, Associate Professor in Sociology and Criminology, has been appointed to the EU Knowledge Hub on Prevention of Radicalisation’s Thematic Panel on New Technologies and the Online Dimension.
The Hub brings together policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working towards preventing radicalisation and violent extremism across Europe. One of its core focus areas is New Technologies and the Online Dimension, which aims to address online radicalisation.
In addition to developing new approaches to address the challenges posed by terrorists and violent extremists who exploit the internet and digital platforms, this Thematic Panel offers practical tools for frontline practitioners and policymakers.
These include exploring innovative solutions for online prevention, such as strengthening societal and youth resilience and supporting de-radicalisation efforts. Furthermore, the Panel plays a key role in facilitating the development of effective strategies and frameworks.
Recognising academic expertise
This prestigious appointment acknowledges Dr Lakhani’s expertise in the field of digital technologies and violent extremism, as well as his significant contributions to academic research and policy development in the field of radicalisation and counterterrorism.
Some of his recent work has explored the links between video gaming and violent extremism, online radicalisation, and counterterrorism strategies. Dr Lakhani, who has also authored reports for the Home Office and the European Commission, said:
