It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of a friend and former colleague, Angie Oxley. Angie passed away on Wednesday 16 July 2025 at the age of 76 after a short battle with cancer.
Angie was a true Brightonian and worked in various departments within the University of Sussex from 1973–2003, starting off as a Research Assistant in SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit). Her most notable role was the first (and only) Music and Media Studies Coordinator, a role which was created when the BA Media Studies course was introduced to the University in the early 1990s. Angie was Music Coordinator during the 1980s, running a Music Library in Arts B and dealt with many local musicians and external tutors.
Angie’s office was always a hive of activity and open for faculty, students or anyone passing to have a chat. You would often hear Angie’s booming laugh across the corridors of Arts B, and later in Essex House.
After leaving the University in 2003, Angie moved to Spain but always kept her roots in Brighton and moved back some years later.
A cremation will take place on Thursday 21 August and there will be no service.
A celebration of Angie’s life will be held during the afternoon of Friday 10 October 2025 (which would have been Angie’s seventy-seventh birthday) in a local Brighton pub. Please contact Terry Bryan if you would like to attend (t.j.bryan@sussex.ac.uk).
