More than 850 young scientists and families explored hands-on STEM activities at the Hastings Science Fair on Saturday 18 October at East Sussex College. The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine showcased a range of interactive exhibits designed to inspire children aged 5–12 — from making DNA bracelets and seed balls, to exploring quantum sensors, infrared cameras and a plant health application.
The event was even featured on ITV News, highlighting the team’s fantastic public engagement and enthusiasm for sharing science with the community.
Dr Yanet Sepúlveda, Research Fellow (Ecology and Evolution), said: “It was amazing to see children returning to our stand again and again, making seed balls and writing messages to Earth. Moments like these show how hands-on activities can spark real curiosity about wildlife, climate change, and the science we do at Sussex.”
A parent added: “My kids couldn’t get enough of the activities. The team made science accessible, hands-on, and genuinely inspiring.”
Kellie Powney, Research Projects Officer, who coordinated Sussex’s involvement, said: “A big thank you to all our staff and volunteers — your energy and commitment made the day a real success and showcased Sussex outreach at its best.”
