Celebrating our campus heritage orchard

Did you know that the University of Sussex is home to a heritage orchard, planted by our very own community? In 2023 students and staff came together to plant a collection of six heritage Sussex apple tree varieties, helping to preserve local heritage while enriching our campus landscape.
This project began back in April 2022, during The Big Biodiversity Conversation workshop. Members of the Sussex community discussed and voted on five key biodiversity projects they wanted to see come to life on campus. One idea that came to the life was the Orchards and Food Production Project, a vision to plant an orchard of traditional Sussex fruit trees and create new opportunities for nature-connected learning, food resilience, and community engagement.
Why is this important?
Our orchard plays a vital role in supporting wildlife on campus. Fruit trees provide blossom for pollinators in spring, habitat for insects and birds, and, eventually, fruit that supports the wider local ecosystem. Beyond ecological benefits, the orchard offers a calming green space for students and staff to enjoy, strengthening our connection to the natural world in the midst of a busy campus environment. The site offers our community a space to see nature grow with them as they experience life at Sussex.
Help as an Orchard Care Volunteer
We’re looking for volunteers to keep an eye on the orchard, helping ensure the trees stay healthy as they grow, blossom and eventually begin to fruit. With just a quick walk through the orchard from time to time.
If you think this could be you, come along to our Orchard Care Session onThursday 11 December, 2.30pm–3.30pm.You’ll learn basic tree care, how to support young fruit trees in their early years, and how you can help the orchard thrive with just a few minutes of your time.
