Seize the Switch – turn it off before you go

Last updated: Thursday, 4 December 2025

As we approach the festive break, we’re asking all staff to help reduce our energy use across campus by completing the switch-off checklist before heading home.
Saving energy and reducing costs
Over the past year, the University has consumed an average of 120,559 kWh of gas and 48,549 kWh of electricity per day - enough to heat around 3,827 homes per day or enough power to make 693,557 cups of tea! Every energy-saving action - big or small - helps create a more sustainable campus, reduce costs, and supports a healthier planet.
Switch-off checklist
Lights and windows
- Switch-off all lights.
- Close windows.
Heating and cooling
- Set radiator thermostats to frost (turn the dial to the star setting *).
- Switch-off any heaters.
- Switch-off air conditioning units.
Electronics and devices
- Switch-off monitors and laptops.
- Switch-off TVs completely (not standby).
- Unplug phone chargers and other small devices.
- Switch-off any other electrical items.
Final check
- Organise a final walkaround to double-check everything is off.
- If you’re unsure about turning something off or can’t find a heating control, consult with your building manager.
Lab user checklist
In addition to the standard checklist, and if safe to do so, please switch-off:
- Ovens
- Heating blocks
- Drying cabinets
- Centrifuges
- Tabletop spinners
- Microscopes
Also:
- Lower fume cupboard sashes
- Check heating/air conditioning controls aren’t running unnecessarily
Every small action counts! Thank you for helping us reduce energy use, reduce costs, and make our campus more sustainable over the festive break.
