Free Active Staff classes in January

This January, Sussex Sport is offering a fantastic array of free classes to help get your year off to a flying start.
For two weeks from Monday 12 January, all staff working on campus can come along to any number of classes in the new Active Arches studios. The classes are suitable for all levels, with no experience required, and are staff-only.
What’s happening?
Check out the full schedule of classes below, with descriptions of what each class involves at the bottom of this article.
Monday 12 and 19 January
- Small weights with Andy/Ria, 1:05pm-1:50pm.
Tuesday 13 and 20 January
- Breathing Space with Megan, 8am-8:45am
- Yin Yoga with Hannah, 1:05pm-1:50pm
- PiYo (a mix of yoga and pilates) with Gemma, 5:05pm-5:50pm.
Wednesday 14 and 21 January
- Small weights with Andy/Ria, 1:05pm-1:50pm.
Thursday 15 and 22 January
- Meditation with Mariam, 8am-8:45am
- Yin Yoga with Hannah, 1:05pm-1:50pm.
Friday 16 and 23 January
- High Intensity Circuits Training with Gemma, 1:15pm-2pm.
How do I sign up for sessions?
- Check out the list of free classes on the Sussex Sport Online Shop.
- Add the classes you’d like to attend to your basket.
- At checkout you’ll be asked to login or register an account. If you’ve never created an Online Shop account before, please do so using any email address you like.
After you’ve confirmed your order, that’s it! We look forward to seeing you at your chosen sessions. Just one request - if for any reason you can’t come, please let us know by emailing sussexsport@sussex.ac.uk.
What should I wear?
Please wear whatever you would normally wear for exercise. If you need to get changed, please use the facilities in the Student Centre (next door to the Active Arches). There are changing rooms and showers towards the back of the building, directly across from the main entrance.
There’s no need to change for breathwork or meditation sessions if you don’t want to!
What do the classes involve?
Small weights with Andy/Ria focuses on strengthening the whole body for everyday life. Lifting, pushing, pulling, and strengthening the core using kettlebells, dumbbells, medicine balls, powerbags and more.
Breathing Space with Megan is a gentle morning practice combining mindful breathing and meditation to help you arrive grounded, focused, and ready for the day.
Yin Yoga with Hannah offers a slow-paced practice focused on deep stretching and stillness. Poses are held for several minutes to support encourage mindfulness, promoting relaxation, inner awareness, and a sense of calm. Music will support movement, and you will be able to find what suits your body using props and breathwork.
PiYo with Gemma combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga. We rev up the speed to deliver a true low impact workout that leaves your body looking lean and defined.
Meditation with Mariam involves guided breathing, gentle body awareness, and periods of quiet sitting to help participants cultivate focus, relaxation, and present-moment awareness.
High Intensity Circuits Training with Gemma is a functional circuit class that will challenge strength, fitness and endurance. Using a variety of equipment as well as floor and bodyweight exercises.
