I’m pleased to share Sussex’s Digital and Data Futures Vision for 2035, alongside the first plan that will start bringing it to life. This isn’t just about new systems or tools – it’s about how digital and data can help us recover, rebuild and create a better experience for both students and staff.
At a time of real financial and operational pressure, our strategy - Sussex 2035: Creating Progressive Futures – flourishing, sustainability and progress for the whole world – sets a clear direction. Digital and data are central to delivering that vision, by putting in place the core foundations, consistent ways of working, and confidence and capability needed for the University to thrive in the years ahead.
What this vision is really about
This work is grounded in the everyday experience of life at Sussex. By 2035, we want a university where:
- students and staff feel confident using digital tools
- data is trusted and supports good decisions
- AI is used ethically, transparently and responsibly
- services are joined up, intuitive and save time
In short, digital and data should enable people to learn, teach, research and work more effectively.
Why it matters now
Digital and Data Futures directly supports Sussex’s strategic priorities: recovering student numbers, growing income, building our reputation, operating efficiently and effectively.
Put simply:
- better digital experiences help students thrive and stay engaged
- strong insight helps teams plan, prioritise and intervene earlier
- automation and AI reduce manual effort and duplication
- shared digital content extends our reach, impact and reputation
What this means for students
By 2035, students will experience a more connected and supportive digital environment, with easier access to learning and support, clearer insight into their progress, and ethical use of AI to enhance learning. Digital and data skills will be built in, supporting employability, wellbeing and a strong sense of belonging – so students can focus on learning, not navigating systems.
What this means for staff
For colleagues, this vision is about confidence, capability and time. Joined‑up systems, trusted data, and smarter use of automation and AI will reduce duplication and manual work. Collaboration will be easier, insight will better support student success and wellbeing, and staff will have more support to grow digital and data skills – helping everyone focus on work that really matters.
How we’ll deliver – starting with brilliant basics
Delivery starts now. The first three‑year plan (2025/26–2027/28) focuses on getting the basics right and is closely aligned with our Recovery and Rebuilding priorities.
Across five University‑wide workstreams, shaped with colleagues from across Sussex, we’ll build stronger foundations, deliver early benefits, and make steady, visible improvements – particularly through better data, AI and automation.
Looking ahead
This vision helps Sussex move from recovery towards long‑term resilience, with digital and data playing a practical supporting role.
