Refectory road closure and bus route changes
Posted on behalf of: Better Campus Team
Last updated: Friday, 1 December 2023
On Thursday 2 November, there will be changes to bus and road routes on campus. The following changes will take place:
-
East Slope Road will reopen
-
Refectory Road will become access only
-
Buses will no longer serve Bramber House Bus Stop (Refectory Road)
-
Taxis will not be permitted along Refectory Road
These changes are expected to stay in place until April 2024.
East Slope Road
East Slope Road will reopen to road vehicles. This will become the only vehicle route to the north of campus including Lewes Court and Northfield residences.
East Slope Road will be a two-way road with temporary traffic lights at the bottom of the road.
Please take extra care when using East Slope Road whilst drivers and pedestrians familiarise themselves with this altered route.
Refectory Road
Refectory Road will become access only – the temporary road will close and there will be no access to Northfield Lane or East Slope Road. Visitors will still be able to access the Health Centre car park and accessible parking bays.
Bus Routes
Bramber House Bus Stop will close and buses will not serve Refectory Road whilst the road is closed. Buses to Lewes Court and Northfields will instead go via East Slope Road. All other bus stops remain operational.
The nearest bus stops to Refectory Road (for Bramber House, Student Centre and the Health Centre) will be either North South Road or East Slope Road.
We have requested an additional temporary bus stop for East Slope Road, so that there can be bus stops heading in both directions. If approved, these bus stops will be accessible either via walking routes or via lifts in the Student Centre – please note that a University Access Pass (separate to a University ID card) is required to use this lift – if you do not have an Access Pass you can request one online.
Taxis
Taxis will not be permitted along Refectory Road. The nearest taxi drop-off points will be North South Road or Northfield Lane.
Pedestrian Routes
There are no alterations to the pedestrian routes currently in place.
Why are these changes taking place?
East Slope Road has been closed to vehicles whilst work took place to upgrade gas, electricity and water utilities at the bottom of the road in preparation for the West Slope development. These works have progressed and part of the road can now be reopened.
Refectory Road is becoming access only to allow the final works at the bottom of East Slope Road to be completed. A retaining wall is also being built along the north end of Refectory Road that will form part of the West Slope development construction site.
Changes to bus routes are needed as buses will no longer be able to use Refectory Road.
