Ahead of RAAC investigatory works in Falmer House, an original mural, Day’s Rest, Day’s Work, by acclaimed artist Ivon Hitchens, is to be placed into storage to preserve this iconic artwork housed in Mandela Hall.
Falmer House, home to our Student Union, is a Grade 1 Listed Building meaning it is of exceptional national, architectural or historical importance, with Hitchen’s artwork cited within its listing.
Being a Listed Building, all works within Falmer House have to be carefully planned and approved before they take place. Hitchens mural will be safely stored away whilst investigatory works take place over the coming weeks and will be reinstated upon completion of any remedial works.
Falmer House RAAC Update
In September 2023, RAAC was discovered in the roof of Mandela Hall, Falmer House. To ensure the safety of building users, Mandela Hall has been closed and the Capital Programme team has been planning further investigatory work to assess the condition of the RAAC panels. Upon completion of the investigatory works, outcomes will be reviewed and next steps planned.
Bramber House RAAC Update
Having successfully replaced RAAC over one stairwell of Bramber House, the team is now replacing RAAC above a second stairwell to the north of the building. This work is expected to last until the Winter break, with the RAAC replacement continuing into the New Year. Please continue to follow diversionary signage to use the building safely.
