Sussex people create art for display around West Slope

Artwork now on display around the West Slope development
Artwork from students and staff across the University is now colourfully lining the perimeter of the West Slope development adjoining Refectory Road.
Showcasing photography, sketches, paintings and more, the bright and cheerful site hoardings proudly display the fantastic range of creative talent here at Sussex.
Joshua Aiyenuro, a recent Economics graduate, said of his artwork which shows two detailed ‘reflected’ portraits: ‘I enjoy most mediums of art, but my main focuses are ink illustrations and pencil drawings. This was an art piece I did for my friend's poetry business. The poem was about nostalgia from a previous relationship.’
Professor Liz James, the Interim Dean of Media, Arts & Humanities, said: ‘Sussex is a proud custodian of many public artworks, including the recently installed artwork from Turner Prize-winning artist, Helen Cammock, which sits just across from our new West Slope artwork, so to have the rich and diverse talents of our students and staff proudly on display is just one small way to continue the Sussex spirit as we embark on the next phase of our campus’ evolution.’
Abigail Keyla, a final-year Media and Communications student said: ‘It’s so nice to see the University installing so many public artworks, which not just proudly displays the talents of Sussex students and staff, but also makes the campus more pleasant to look at! I am excited to see what else is in store for our campus.’
The artwork bordering the West Slope development will be in place until our new purpose-built Health and Wellbeing Centre and the first of our new student accommodation rooms open in 2026.
