Just two years after construction began, we’re preparing to open the doors of the University’s new Health and Wellbeing Centre in Newick House, the first West Slope building to open, and one which will also be home to 66 new student flats.

The Centre will open in mid-May, marking a significant milestone for the West Slope development and an important step forward in strengthening wellbeing provision at Sussex, supporting the health of our campus and local community.

Bringing together student wellbeing and NHS primary care

Human flourishing is one of the key elements of our Sussex 2035 strategy, and the new Health and Wellbeing Centre reflects our long‑term commitment to supporting student wellbeing.

The new Health and Wellbeing Centre provides an opportunity for our Wellbeing services and our NHS GP practice to work more closely together and under the same roof. There will be a welcoming joint service reception on the ground floor, very near to our University mental health nurses, and NHS mental health practitioners, who will be working alongside each other. The waiting area will also be the new home for our Wellbeing stall offering more relaxed wellbeing activities and providing students an overview of the support on offer.

Amanda Griffiths, Head of Wellbeing Services, said: “The new Centre is going to make a real difference to the services we can offer. Demand for wellbeing support continues to grow, and having this dedicated space will allow us to deliver the best possible support to our students in a welcoming and confidential environment.”

Supporting students and the wider community

NHS GP services will be housed on the first floor of the new Health and Wellbeing Centre. With dedicated consultation rooms and purpose‑built facilities, this represents a significant improvement in access to healthcare for both students and local residents. The new space will provide a calm and welcoming environment for patients to seek support and treatment.

The second floor will be dedicated to our University therapeutic services, providing quiet, comfortable, and confidential spaces for students to seek treatment from therapists, counsellors and psychological wellbeing practitioners. There will also be dedicated group rooms for NHS-run clinics, University psychoeducative workshops, and group therapy.

The Student Centre will remain the first stop for student wellbeing enquiries, and this integrated approach will ensure they can access the right support, at the right time, throughout their studies.
