Priscilla, Queen of the South
During Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller History Month, which takes place from 1-30 June, you can join a free, guided walk, organised and hosted by National Trust, to meet Priscilla Queen of the South, a life-size Gypsy cob horse forged in steel by Romany artist blacksmith Jake Bowers.
The sculpture (currently tethered outside Jubilee Lecture Theatre) is part of National Trust’s Changing Chalk project, celebrating the cultural contribution of Gypsy and Traveller communities to the South Downs landscape.
How to join
You can book your place on the walk - places are limited, so please sign up if you are interested in taking part.
Details for the event
- Meet at the Open Market entrance (London Road side)
- Get a bus to the top of Ditchling road/to Ditchling Beacon or top of Stanmer park

On arrival at the sculpture there will be a short talk about how Priscilla came to life and why this powerful artwork matters, as well as a chance to chat, reflect and find out how to get involved in other Changing Chalk activities this summer.
