We are proud to be marking National Inclusion Week 2026 from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 September. Organised annually by Inclusive Employers, the week provides an opportunity to pause, reflect and consider how we can continue to strengthen an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued, respected and supported.
This year’s theme ‘Build Trust. Navigate Change’ recognises the challenges organisations are facing, from significant change and financial pressures to evolving expectations. It also highlights the importance of continuing to create workplaces where people can be themselves, develop and do their best work.
Building inclusion takes more than good intentions. It requires ongoing action, open conversations and accountability. At the heart of this is trust, creating opportunities for people to be heard, valuing different perspectives and recognising the barriers that can affect people’s experiences at work.
This ambition is reflected in Sussex 2035, which sets out our aim to create a University where every student and member of staff can realise their goals, be themselves and do their best work. The Inclusive Sussex Framework 2025-35 also supports this through our long-term approach to culture, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), helping to embed sustainable and inclusive practices across the University.
We are already taking action to build trust and strengthen inclusion. Our Open Listening Programme creates space for staff to engage in difficult conversations and develop greater understanding of different perspectives. EDI learning is also supported through a broad range of courses on LearnUpon, including modules on disability awareness, race equity, and neurodiversity in the workplace.
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champions and Associate Deans for Culture, Equality and Inclusion help promote inclusive behaviours and raise awareness across teams and faculties, while Achievement and Development Reviews (ADRs) provide opportunities to reflect on values and EDI in our everyday work. Our Staff Networks also play an important role in supporting colleagues, building community and empowering marginalised communities.
Above all, National Inclusion Week is a reminder that inclusion is an ongoing journey. As we navigate change together, we can all play a part in building trust by listening, challenging assumptions, valuing different perspectives and making inclusion part of everyday life at Sussex.
