Sussex Research has awarded five Harry Kroto Fellowships in the second round of the scheme. Named after Nobel Prize winner Professor Sir Harry Kroto, the fellowships aim to consolidate sustainable collaborative research with the best international institutions and to provide Sussex's early career researchers with opportunities to establish their research trajectories.
Professor Michael Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), said: “It is very pleasing to see the depth of early career researcher talent that we have at Sussex, across such a wide range of fields. Enabling their cutting-edge research in collaboration with excellent international partners through this scheme is particularly satisfying.”
- Dr Geeta Hitch (Life Sciences), Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance in Ghana
The objectives of this visit are to collaborate with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Antimicrobial Resistance Team, in order to introduce an antimicrobial stewardship programme, which will restrict inappropriate antimicrobial use, improve clinical practice/ patient outcomes and reduce resistance in Ghana. - Dr Konstantinos Koumatos (MPS), The morphology of lath martensite in low carbon steels
This visit to University of California, Berkeley is part of an ongoing research project on the mathematics of steels. The visit will help the project enter into the realm of interdisciplinarity through a collaboration between theoreticians and experimentalists, from mathematics to engineering and materials science. - Dr Kun Liang (Engineering and Informatics), A green choice for future refrigeration: linear compressor using ammonia
This project with KTH Royal Institute of Technology will investigate the future refrigeration system using a novel oil-free linear compressor and ammonia as refrigerant. The benefits of such system are zero ozone depletion potential (ODP), zero global warming potential (GWP), high efficiency and low cost. - Dr Achilleas Boukis (BMEC), Exploring the building blocks of the employee-based brand equity process for polarized brands
This research visit aims at the formation of an international collaboration with lead academics in the strategic brand management area from the Lund Brand management group (Lund University, School of Economics and Management) to initiate a research project around the building blocks of the employee-based brand equity process for different types of brands. - Dr Alice King (MPS), Functional Nanomaterials: Design, Characterisation and Application
This project is the consolidation of a collaboration between the Nanoscience Institute at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Materials Physics at Sussex, developing functional nanomaterials for sensors and composite design.
The Harry Kroto Fellowship scheme will run again next year. Further details on the Harry Kroto Fellowships and other internal funding opportunities can be found on the Sussex Research website.
