Academics at the University of Sussex Business School have been recognised for their contributions to scholarly research with several celebrating success as winners of the 25th annual Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence.
Emerald Publishing, a publisher of over 300 journals and more than 2500 books advancing the research and practice of business and management, established the Literati awards to reward outstanding contributions made by the scholarly community, strengthen the impact of the winning research and provide authors and reviewers with greater recognition and international kudos.
Judged by Emerald’s editorial boards on the ability to demonstrate insight, rigour and relevance, as well as being written and presented well, Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence fall into the following three categories:
- Outstanding and Highly Commended Papers – the backbone of the awards for excellence, these awards reward the most impressive pieces of work published throughout the previous year;
- Outstanding Reviewers – rewarding reviewers for ensuring that every paper published makes a genuine impact to the academic field;
- Outstanding Author Contributions (book series) – rewards authors who have contributed something new and significant to their area of knowledge.
Award winners from the Business School included:
- Martin Schleper – Outstanding Reviewer: International Journal of Operations & Production Management
- Martin Schleper – Outstanding Paper: “Extending the supply chain visibility boundary: Utilizing stakeholders for identifying supply chain sustainability risks”, International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management

- Roger Strange – Outstanding Paper: “Industry 4.0, global value chains and international business”, Multinational Business Review (co-authored with Antonella Zucchella)
An assessment of how widespread-adoption of new digital-technologies (Industry 4.0) might affect the location and organisation of activities within global-value chains (GVCs) revealing that digital-technologies have considerable potential to disrupt how and where activities are located and organised within GVCs.
- Nachiappan Subramanian – Highly Commended Paper: “Role of social media in retail network operations and marketing to enhance customer satisfaction”, International Journal of Operations & Production Management (co-authored with Usha Ramanathan and Guy Parrott)
A study of how retail network operations leverage the potential of social media reviews along with unique service operations to satisfy customers. The study analyses the nexus of a brand, promotional offers, and service operations with their interaction through social media reviews on customer satisfaction levels.
