The University of Sussex community are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jamal Edwards MBE, one of our wonderful Entrepreneurs-in-Residence.
We were incredibly excited to partner with such an inspirational and gifted entrepreneur, and his legacy will continue to inspire our students. Bringing passion and insight, his appointment was influenced by student feedback on the role models they identify with and want to hear from.
At the age of 24, Jamal was awarded an MBE in 2014 for his services to music, founding the online music platform SBTV. He also served as an ambassador for the Prince of Wales’s charity, the Prince’s Trust.
In September 2021, Jamal took up the first Entrepreneur in Residence position at the University of Sussex, to provide support to a growing number of students who have their own ambitions to become entrepreneurs, playing a vital role in promoting their aspirations.
Jamal met with students on campus last Autumn term and generously gave his time and business expertise through guest talks; meeting with our student Entrepreneurship Society; acting as mentor to both student and graduate entrepreneurs; and connecting students and graduates to others in his network.
During his time at the Business School and Careers and Entrepreneurship Centre, Jamal helped ensure equal participation in student entrepreneurship and business creation, encouraging students to be critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, commentators, citizens, and activists.
Our thoughts go out to Jamal’s friends and family at this incredibly sad time.
