As you may be aware, the Apprenticeship Levy is a UK tax on employers which is used to fund Apprenticeship qualifications from level 2 (equal to five GCSE passes) to level 7 (equal to a Masters degree).
It is payable by all employers with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million, at a rate of 0.5% of their total pay bill. The money is stored in a fund for the employer and they can draw the funding back to pay for apprenticeship qualifications. The funding available to Sussex to pay for apprenticeship qualifications for staff is around £700,000 per year.
In order to retain our great staff we support a learning culture in which staff are equipped with the tools, skills and confidence for success and career progression.
Given the funding available to us to support the development, talent management and retention of our staff, it was agreed by the University Executive Team, that we should make every effort to make full use of the funds.
Over the coming months we will be providing updates on the range of opportunities available.
Right now though, conversations following on from Achievement and Development Reviews are a really good time to discuss, with your line manager, how undertaking an apprenticeship qualification could benefit you and your area of work both now and to meet future business needs.
