Sara Tooth, Assistant Events Manager in the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO), has managed a number of incredible graduation ceremonies at Sussex. This year’s Summer Graduation is coming up on 22-26 July and staff can still sign up to help during the event. It’s a great opportunity do something a little different to your everyday role and be a part of important and joyful days for students and their families. Hear more from Sara about what makes Graduation so special:
For many years, I have worked on Graduation, which I’ve loved. My role has recently changed to have more of an EDI aspect, but Graduation has always been a pivotal moment for students, and being part of that celebration is special. The planning and coordination involved, ensuring that everything runs smoothly so that students and their families have a memorable experience, is incredibly rewarding.
On average, nearly 14,000 glasses of prosecco are consumed by graduates and their guests over Graduation. During the week, each member of the Events team walks over 100,000 steps around the Brighton Centre; if we include the set up days, the number is even higher.
Nearly 20,000 graduands and guests visit the Brighton Centre during the week of Summer Graduation, and more than 20,000 people from over 120 countries visit our webpages where the livestream can be viewed. The exact timings for each ceremony have been carefully and precisely worked out to ensure everything runs smoothly and on time. We even provide training for the presenters on pronouncing the graduates' names.
One thing that consistently makes me relax and lose track of time is reading. Outside of work, I enjoy various activities that help me recharge my batteries and love spending quality time with loved ones and making memories. But when I open a book and start turning the pages, hours can slip by without me even noticing. It helps me unwind and escape from reality by being completely absorbed in a story and letting my imagination run wild!
My mum has inspired me the most in my life. Her determination and resilience have taught me the invaluable lesson of never giving up and always putting in my best effort, no matter the challenge. She taught me that everyone is equal and to treat others how you would like to be treated. Her kindness was inspiring and shaped me into the person I am today.
Sussex is a special place; I love the community feel and natural beauty of campus. One of my favourite spots used to be outside Chichester I, where I spent many lunch breaks in the warmer months by the pond. It was a peaceful area where I could unwind. The space has been remodelled in recent years, so I have been exploring some of the other green spots on campus. I love observing different wildlife and insects, especially dragonflies, and watching the world go by.
