Published on 13 March 2025, the 13th edition of the textbook Economics has expanded its author team to include Bridget Kauma, Assistant Professor in Economics at the University of Sussex Business School, and Eric Golson, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Surrey.
For over 40 years, David Begg's Economics textbook has been the foundational text for introductory economics courses across Europe. The textbook explores how economics influences our daily lives, society, political decisions and environmental concerns.
Nicknamed the ‘Swiss Army knife’ of economics textbooks, Economics links theory with case studies in each chapter, showcasing the everyday application of the material. End of chapter questions allow students to learn at their own pace.
“I am delighted that this authorship provided me with the opportunity to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in economics with a wider audience,” Bridget Kauma said. “I used earlier editions of this textbook as an undergraduate myself, and for most undergraduate students it still represents the first textbook they will use at university.”
Kauma and Golson’s new contributions to the macroeconomics chapters offer fresh perspectives on critical issues, including the global economic impact of war, macro-inflation dynamics, and AI’s role in the labour market.
“I have attempted, when and where possible, to tailor the content to both global and contemporary audiences,” Kauma added. “For instance, I have introduced more references to and discussions of the economies of the Global South.”
As well as lecturing at the Business School since 2021, Bridget Kauma received her PhD in Economics and her MSc in International Economics from the University of Sussex, too. Her research interests are in productivity and labour markets.
“It is satisfying to know that through this book I can contribute to the learning journey of economics students globally,” Kauma said. “I also take some pride in the fact that I am the first woman to be on the authoring team since the first edition of this textbook was published over 40 years ago.”
Congratulations to Bridget Kauma.
