Your PGT Update: Dissertation support, £15,000 grants, Sussex brings science to Glastonbury, and ‘Wax Virginia’

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students), Professor Kate O'Riordan, wrote to all postgraduate taught students earlier today. Below you can read her full message:
Hello,
I hope your studies are going well, and as you navigate this final stretch of your postgraduate journey, I want to remind you about academic support for you at Sussex: The Library’s Teaching and Learning team is available throughout the summer.
- You can access a range of research skills guides to help you develop your research skills at your own pace.
- You can also book a one-to-one with a librarian for tailored advice on research strategies, finding and evaluating sources, and referencing.
- The Skills Hub also offers a wealth of online resources to help you sharpen your academic writing, manage your time, and refine your research skills.
It is a fantastic time to be part of our university, we have been recognised in the QS World University Rankings among the top 5% globally for sustainability with a score of 90/100, and placed in the top 18% of institutions worldwide!
We are also celebrating being 17th in the UK for employer outcomes, with 92.9% of our graduates in employment. It is great to see these results, especially the employer outcomes, which are so important for those of you who will be looking for employment after your studies.

Access career support now and after your studies
Did you know that you can access CareerHub, your platform for vacancies, careers support and resources, for three years after you graduate? Through CareerHub, you can book a one-to-one appointment with a careers consultant, and access resources such as CV360 (a tool where you can gain instant feedback on your CV) and The Big Interview (where you can undertake virtual mock interviews).
Thinking of studying a PhD? - there is a £12,000 scholarship up for grabs
Did you know each year we award up to five Climate Leader Scholarships to students who have shown outstanding climate leadership in their local communities? There are five £3,000 scholarships available to new students (in any subject) starting courses in September 2025. This is £3,000 per year of full time study. You can apply if you are a current home student who is going to study for a PhD. The deadline to apply is midnight on 15 July.
It might be summer, but visa attendance rules still apply!
Please remember that all Postgraduate taught students holding Student visa sponsorship must follow attendance requirements during the summer months of your course. You can find further information about this on the Student Hub. You can find out about your attendance requirements and also your visa responsibilities.
As full-time PGT students, the summer is still considered term time and even though you do not have any timetabled teaching and learning, the University is still required to record any contact you have with us so that we can demonstrate that you are meeting our attendance requirements.

Spirit of Sussex Award – one month to go!
You have just one month to log your Spirit of Sussex Award points. This enables you to demonstrate all of your achievements over your time here for future employers. Throughout your Sussex journey you will have taken part in lots of points-worthy extra-curricular activities, both on and off campus.
This includes things like having a part-time job, developing hobbies and interests, or attending training and workshops. All you need to do now is log your activities in the SoSA platform before 1 August 2025.

Wax Virginia
If you are visiting the Library, do take a break to meet “Wax Virginia, a life-sized waxwork of Virginia Woolf, now permanently housed at Sussex. She is the centrepiece of Pressing Matters: Printing with Virginia Woolf, an exhibition celebrating Woolf’s legacy as a writer and publisher, open until 29 September.
Play with Pride tournament
Brighton and Hove Albion, Sussex FA and Brighton and Hove Albion Foundation are launching a brand-new football tournament for everyone Play with Pride! The tournament, hosted on University of Sussex pitches, will feature 10 seven-a-side teams, including members of local recreational clubs and groups that have shown ongoing dedication and commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
Play with Pride will be part of an all-day experience hosted at The Terrace on Sunday 27 July, one week before Brighton & Hove Pride – the biggest Pride event in the UK. Read more and book your tickets.
The Sussex professor bringing science to Glastonbury
First established in 2022, Science Futures aims to engage festival goers in exploring how science shapes our daily lives and all the novel and exciting ways that science is levelling-up to preserve and protect our planet.
As Principal Curator of Science Futures for the first time this year, University of Sussex, Professor Forrester has been leading on activities for the Glastonbury event with a primary objective of making science accessible and enjoyable for all. Read about it on the Student Hub.
