Professor Anjum Memon, Chair in Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, has been awarded the esteemed President’s Medal by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK. This award recognises Professor Memon’s outstanding contributions to public health and his significant impact on the field.
The FPH serves as the standard-setting and regulatory body for public health professionals in the UK and globally, advocating for policies that improve population health and wellbeing. The President’s Medal is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the work of the Faculty and public health more broadly.
The award was formally presented at the annual FPH Awards Ceremony on 24 June 2025 at the Royal College of Physicians in London, where distinguished professionals in the field were honoured.
Commenting on his award, Professor Memon said: “I am incredibly honoured to receive this prestigious award and recognition from my peers at the Faculty of Public Health. I have had the privilege of learning from the most eminent epidemiologist and am proud to have contributed to the understanding of some of the major public health issues.”
Professor Kevin Fenton, President of the FPH, said: “In awarding Professor Memon the prestigious Faculty of Public Health President’s Medal, we are pleased to recognise his outstanding contributions to public health, particularly in scholarship and academia. Over a distinguished career, he has authored more than 200 publications on issues ranging from Covid-19 to smoking cessation and mental health, making a meaningful contribution to the advancement of public health science. We are pleased that Professor Memon continues to work with the Faculty in the role of Local Board Member for the South East of England.”
Dr Emma Taylor-Gallardo, BSMS alumna and F1 doctor, carried out research with Professor Memon from Year 2 of her studies and was also the BSMS INSPIRE Student Lead with Professor Memon. She said: "Professor Anjum Memon is not only an exceptional epidemiologist but an extraordinary mentor, teacher and friend. From the moment he took me under his wing as a second-year medical student, he instilled in me a deep appreciation for research, epidemiology and how to interpret numbers and tell the story they reveal.”
“His selfless dedication to mentoring students is truly inspiring, he has always been generous with his time, wisdom and encouragement. Many have had the privilege of learning from him, and his impact is immeasurable. Professor Memon’s work and legacy will long continue to shape future students and researchers to carry forward his dedication to the fields of public health and epidemiology.”
Professor Richard McManus, Dean of BSMS, added: “Professor Memon’s receipt of the President’s Medal is a richly deserved recognition of his exceptional contributions to public health and education. We are proud to celebrate this achievement with him.”
“This recognition highlights Professor Memon’s continued commitment to public health research, policy, and practice, reinforcing the medical school’s impact on national and global health initiatives.”
