The University of Sussex Research Ethics Policy was approved by Council in July and is now in effect. The policy is an important step in strengthening the University’s commitment to upholding high ethical standards and conducting research with integrity. It sets out the core ethical principles that all members of the University must follow when carrying out research and research-related activities conducted under the auspices of the University.
Staff and students should familiarise themselves with the policy so that they are aware of why ethical review is undertaken at the University and the circumstances under which ethical review for research and research-related activities is required.
The policy should be read alongside the University of Sussex Research Ethics Policy Supporting Notes which, provide greater clarity and definition to the content of the policy.
Professor Keith Jones, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation said "The policy will be useful in promoting ethical awareness, and also supporting a culture of openness and accountability for all of our research. These are things that the public and our funders are expecting us to do well."
Professor Kate O’Riordan, Pro Vice Chancellor for Education and Students said “Research ethics are vital to the life of our fields of study, to the making of academic knowledge and to education. Having a clear framework for students and staff at Sussex is essential. Thank you to everyone involved in building this policy.”
The policy can be found on the Research and Innovation Services ethics webpages and any queries can be directed to the Research Ethics, Integrity and Governance team via: rgoffice@sussex.ac.uk.
