Each year on 1 October, communities across the world mark the International Day of Older Persons. It’s a moment to reflect on ageing, to recognise the contributions of older adults, and to consider how we can build societies that are more inclusive for all generations.
In the UK, the theme for 2025 is Building Belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections.
Why belonging matters
Belonging is about more than simply being present. It is about feeling recognised, valued and connected. For older people, those everyday interactions, from a chat with a neighbour to the support of long-standing friendships, are central to wellbeing, confidence and independence.
Yet as people age, those ties can become harder to maintain. Retirement, bereavement, health changes and the loss of familiar networks can all make it more difficult to feel part of community life.
Barriers and opportunities
Places and systems around us play a huge part in creating belonging. Public seating, reliable transport, accessible toilets and welcoming community centres can make the difference between isolation and connection.
But it’s not just about infrastructure. Attitudes towards ageing matter too. If older people are seen only as vulnerable, we risk overlooking the reality: older adults are volunteers, carers, mentors and leaders. They are active contributors, shaping community life as much as they are shaped by it.
Building connection across generations
Learning communities, including universities, have an important role to play in fostering belonging across ages. Older people are not only students embracing lifelong learning, but also alumni, colleagues and neighbours. Intergenerational initiatives such as mentoring, volunteering and cultural events open up chances for people of all ages to learn from each other and celebrate together.
A call to reflect and act
The International Day of Older Persons is a moment of reflection, a celebration and a call to action. It asks us to reflect on the ways that we can have meaningful social connections with people of all ages. It celebrates the power of human connection at every stage of life. It also challenges us to ensure that ageing is not accompanied by isolation, but by inclusion, purpose and a strong sense of belonging.
By valuing social connections and addressing barriers, we can help build communities where older people continue to thrive.
