The University has a responsibility to ensure the safe management of chemicals, other hazardous substances, and their waste under its control. This could include things such as chemicals used for cleaning, substances used in a lab experiment or workshop, wood dust produced during a sanding process, dangerous substances that are flammable, and compressed gases.
Following a period of consultation with stakeholders and the Health and Safety Committee, the University has approved the new Safe Management of Chemicals, Other Hazardous Substances, and their Waste Policy.
This new policy applies to all staff, students, contractors, third parties and visitors in relation to work, research and education, and covers all locations and activities under the University’s control, wherever they take place.
The topics the policy covers include:
- transport of dangerous goods
- classification, labelling and packaging (GBCLP)
- control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH)
- dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres (DSEAR)
- Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (UKREACH)
You can read the full policy on the Health, Safety and Wellbeing website. Specific supporting resources for the topics it covers are linked from the policy, or can be found on the Health, Safety and Wellbeing A-Z.
