The event is designed to foreground the voices of those with lived experience of residential care, alongside practitioners, policy leaders, and researchers.
The University of Sussex will be host to an international summit on 15-16 September on ‘What constitutes quality in children’s residential care’, in partnership with the Association of Children’s Residential and Community Services and the International Work Group on Therapeutic Residential Care.
Addressing growing calls for the elimination of all forms of residential group care for young people of all ages, the event has been designed to foreground the voices of those with lived experience of residential care, alongside practitioners, policy leaders, and researchers, the two-day event includes a rich mix of keynote lectures, panel discussions, and extended workshops to facilitate in‑depth dialogue, critical reflection, and the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
Event Chair, Lisa Holmes, Professor of Applied Social Science in the Faculty of Social Sciences, said:
“I am delighted to be hosting this Summit at Sussex. It is essential for us to create space to have meaningful dialogue about children’s residential care. We hope to provide a platform to embrace the complexity and nuance exists within child welfare systems globally and move away from reductive debates.”
To date, over 150 delegates have registered to attend from over 20 countries. Registration will remain open until 7 September at Association of Children's Residential & Community Services (ACRC) - TRC International Summit.
