World Mental Health Day 2026: real voices, real change

World Mental Health Day takes place this Saturday, 10th October, offering an opportunity to reflect on our mental health, check in with ourselves and others, and remind ourselves of the support available to us.
This year’s theme is ‘Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change’, highlighting the importance of listening to people’s experiences of mental health and using those experiences to help create meaningful change.
Talking about mental health can make a real difference. But just as important as starting conversations is taking the time to listen. Whether someone is experiencing stress, anxiety, low mood or simply having a difficult time, feeling heard and supported can be an important first step.
Take a moment to check in
World Mental Health Day is a good reminder that looking after our mental health doesn’t always require a big change. Small actions can make a difference.
You could:
- Check in with a colleague and make time to really listen to how they are doing.
- Take a proper break during the working day, particularly during busy or stressful periods.
- Make time for something that supports your wellbeing, whether that’s getting outside, moving more, connecting with others or taking time to switch off.
- Reach out for support if things are becoming difficult. You don’t have to wait until you’re struggling to ask for help.
Mental Health and Wellbeing support at Sussex
There are a range of resources available on the Staff Wellbeing Hub if you need extra support or want to know what is available so you can signpost a colleague.
The Mental Wellbeing pages bring together information and resources to help you look after your mental health and wellbeing.
Sussex has a great network of Mental Health First Aiders. Colleagues can reach out to our trained MHFAiders for a safe, supportive and confidential space to talk. Request a 45 minute conversation using the Booking Form, or you can still contact MHFAider directly through the contact list on the MHFAider webpage.
Staff can also access the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which offers 24/7 counselling and emotional support by phone or video, alongside support and resources for areas including stress and low mood. The wellbeing platform also includes resources such as podcasts, mindfulness and a digital gym.
Start a conversation
Consider taking a few minutes to check in with yourself or someone around you.
You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes, simply asking “How are you?”, listening without judgement and knowing where to find further support can make a difference.
