Submitting an assessment can be a stressful time, sharing the following information in advance of deadlines will improve understanding of the assessment processes, reducing the amount of submission issues, particularly during peak assessment periods.

What information should I share with my students?

  • Signpost your students to the Submitting an assessment guide on the StudentHub.
  • Flag to students the paragraph on Resubmitting your work on the Submitting an assessment guide on the StudentHub. Although Canvas will not stop students resubmitting during the late period, late resubmissions will not be marked.
  • On your Canvas module site, include a section for each assessment which tells your students:
    • the task description (purpose, format or genre, audience, individual or group submission, etc)
    • how the assignment will be marked, including links to the assessment criteria and your marking rubric, if you are using one
    • the appropriate AI permission statement for the assessment.

All school Canvas module templates have an agreed format for this content, which usually appears on the Assessment and Feedback, or Assessment Information page of your Canvas module site.

You can also use this PowerPoint deck when talking to students at the start of term.

Assessments that include a similarity check

If an assignment will use the Turnitin Document Processor to generate a similarity report, you should:

  • talk to your students about how you will use the similarity report to inform your marking
  • direct students to the Draft Check Canvas site to check their work before submission
  • tell students to take note of the file requirements for Turnitin similarity reports
  • ask students to read the Turnitin End User Agreement well in advance of submitting their assignment, as they will be asked to confirm that they have read these when they submit to Canvas.

You can copy and paste the following text onto the Assessment and Feedback, or Assessment Information page of your Canvas module site:

“For [the [X] part of] this assessment, files will be checked for similarity.”

  • Read the Turnitin end user agreement before the assessment start date, as you will be prompted to agree to this when submitting your work.
  • Before submitting your assignment, check that your [part of the assessment that requires a similarity report] file meets Turnitin’s eligibility criteria.
  • You will not see the similarity report on your final submission.
  • You can use the Draft Check Canvas site to check your similarity report before submission. To access the Draft Check site, click on Modules in the left-hand Canvas navigation menu, and choose the Draft Check site from the list.
  • For further guidance, see the Submission and Feedback in Canvas: A Student Guide.
