Are you interested in contributing to LGBTQ+ inclusion work at Sussex? We are looking for interested staff to join the University’s LGBTQ+ Steering Group.
By sitting on the LGBTQ+ Steering Group, you will have the opportunity to help influence the University’s approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion. You will be able to support the development and monitoring of the LGBTQ+ Action Plan. This plan aims to build an inclusive culture for LGBTQ+ staff and students across the University by identifying specific actions across several priority areas. Participating in the steering group also offers the opportunity for colleagues to gain experience and skills as part of an institutional committee.
The Steering Group typically meets for 90 minutes once a term. Members of the Steering Group may also join sub-groups working on specific areas, which will meet as needed. Recent Steering Group achievements include collaborating on the application that put the University onto the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index Top 100 Employers list in 2024 and organising the Pride at Sussex photography exhibition in 2025.
We encourage members of the LGBTQ+ staff community at Sussex to join the Steering Group, as well as allies to the LGBTQ+ community. We particularly encourage members who sit at the intersection of multiple marginalised identities (for instance, people who may be LGBTQ+ and also disabled). We hope to recruit members from across different areas of the University and across different job roles.
Please email edi.unit@sussex.ac.uk with a short Expression of Interest of no more than 300 words. These should say something about your role in the University, why you are interested in joining the Steering Group, and any relevant experience you have that may help the Steering Group achieve its aims. Please email the EDI Unit too if you have any questions about the work of the Steering Group or what membership entails.
